A new restaurant opened in my neighbourhood. 囍八方 (English name: Hei Baat Fong) is originally from Sham Shui Po and later expanded to Sheung Wan and now my little hood of Happy Valley. The shop is very tiny and mostly geared for take away. Though there are a small number of bar style seats available if you want to dine in. Menu is in English and Chinese. I decided to have take away. As it was new, they were passing out $10 coupons so I used it and decided to try one of the all day sets ($70). The Pursuit of Happiness is the one I chose and it included five selected dumplings in soup, black fungus and cucumber with chilli sauce and marinated egg appetizer and a drink of either soymilk or house ice tea. I chose a soymilk which was ok and seemed homemade. You can add noodles for $12 but I feared it might be too much food so I opted not to. Good thing I didn't because it was really a lot of food!
The black fungus and cucumbers were in a chili sauce that wasn't too spicy but more of the numbing variety. The cucumbers were fresh and crisp.
The marinated egg were not too salty and quite firm.
There are 10 dumplings in total of 5 different flavours: celery pork, watercress pork chive pork, shrimp wonton and spinach shrimp pork. It was actually a lot of food and I was quite full. I didn't expect that. The dumplings were quit large. The skin was thin and the fillings were abundant and juicy. The standout was the spinach shrimp pork. I would definitely order that one again.
The soup was a fish soup and they said it was MSG free. I guess it was as I didn't feel too thirsty afterwards. The soup was rich and delicious.
Service was friendly and portion size was decent. I will definitely be back if I want dumplings to go.
